چکیده

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate levels of matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8) and substance P (SP) in root canal exudates during root canal treatment (RCT) of nonvital, painful teeth. Materials and Methods: Patients scheduled for nonsurgical RCT were prospectively selected; the study was performed after obtaining informed consent from the patients and was approved by the Institutional Review Board for Clinical Research of Gangnam Severance Hospital, Yonsei University (3-2008-0118). Canal exudates samples were collected using sterilized paper points from teeth scheduled for RCT across three different time periods. MMP-8 and SP levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Data were analyzed using a mixed model analysis and the Pearson correlation analysis (p < 0.05). Results: MMP-8 and SP levels in GCF were decreased during RCT (p < 0.0001), and they showed a weak positive correlation to each other (p < 0.05). Patients’subjective pain levels and the response from percussion test were significantly related to SP level. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that periradicular inflammation endodontic origin can elevate SP and MMP-8 levels in root canal exudates. Interestingly, SP level of canal exudates showed a possibility of being used as an indicator of pain due to periapical pathosis. [J Kor Acad Cons Dent 2011;36(3):196-202.]

Modified Revascularization in Human Teeth Using an Intracanal Formation of Treated Dentin Matrix: A Report of Two Cases

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)-treated dentin matrix (TDM) is an enriched source of bioactive molecules. Therefore, it was hypothesized that fabrication of autogenous TDM on root dentinal walls of necrotic immature permanent teeth may allow more predictable outcome of revascularization treatments. Two young patients with permanent nonvital immature teeth were chosen for revascularizatio...

Apical Closure of Nonvital Permanent Teeth: 15 Months Follow-up Study of Four Cases

Obtaining a complete seal of the root canal system is a major problem in performing root canal treatment in nonvital teeth with incomplete root development and wide open apices. The aim was to study apexification using mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), clinically and radiographically over a period of 15 months. MTA was used in four cases of teeth with incomplete root development in order to ach...

Re: Efficacy of revascularization to induce apexification/apexogensis in infected, nonvital, immature teeth: a pilot clinical study.

Endodontic treatment options for immature, nonvital teeth conventionally include surgical endodontics, apexification with calcium hydroxide, or single visit mineral trioxide aggregate plug. A new treatment option of revascularization has recently been introduced. It involves disinfecting the root canal system, providing a matrix of blood clot into which cells could grow, and sealing of the coro...

Pulpal management of permanent first molars with open apices: case history.

,An eight-year-old with extensive decay in both mandibular first permanent molars was examined in October, 1970. Both molars were found to have immature roots. ,4 nonvital molar was treated to achieve apical closure followed later by conventional endodontic therapy. A vital molar was treated with a formocresol pulpotomy followed by conventional endodontic therapy. After 10 years, both molars sh...

SingleVisit Apexification Technique for Inducing Root-End Barrier Formation in Apical Closures: Report of Two Cases

Traumatized tooth rendered nonvital (pulpal necrosis) before the final stage of the root development results in a short root with a wide canal that can be either divergent or parallel. Although the root canal therapy is the choice of treatment for a nonvital tooth, the above mentioned abnormal root anatomy does not permit a predictable outcome. Mainly, it is not feasible to achieve a good apica...
